NCLEX-PN Frequently Asked Questions
What does NCLEX-PN stand for?
NCLEX-PN stands for NCLEX-PN. It is administered by NCSBN.
Who administers the NCLEX-PN?
The NCLEX-PN (NCLEX-PN) is administered by NCSBN. For official information, visit the NCSBN website.
What is the passing score for the NCLEX-PN?
The passing score for the NCLEX-PN is -0.18 logits, as set by NCSBN. Scoring methodology and passing standards may be updated periodically. Always verify current requirements with the governing body.
How much does the NCLEX-PN exam cost?
The NCLEX-PN exam fee is $200 NCSBN registration fee. This fee is set by NCSBN and may vary by testing centre, region, or membership status. Additional fees for registration or rescheduling may apply.
How is the NCLEX-PN scored?
-0.18 logits. The NCLEX-PN passing standard is expressed on the logit scale, not as a percentage or a raw/scaled score. The NCSBN Board of Directors upheld -0.18 logits effective through March 31, 2029. The standard is re-evaluated every three years alongside the test plan. There is no percentage equivalent and none should be published. Always confirm the current standard with NCSBN before testing.
What does the NCLEX-PN cost?
$200 USD NCSBN registration fee (plus $150 USD international scheduling fee where applicable; $50 USD to change nursing regulatory body after registration; $50 USD to change exam type RN/PN after registration). Registration fees are non-refundable. Licensure/registration fees charged by the individual nursing regulatory body are separate and set by that board. Fees are set by NCSBN and change periodically; confirm current pricing before you register.
What should I know about the current NCLEX-PN exam blueprint?
Facts taken from the 2026 NCLEX-PN Test Plan, effective April 1, 2026 through March 31, 2029 - this is the current plan as of August 2026. Content distribution is based on the 2024 PN Practice Analysis (NCSBN, 2025). Because the exam is variable-length, individual exams may differ up to +/-3% in each category. Note the PN category names differ from the RN plan: the PN plan uses 'Coordinated Care' (not 'Management of Care') and 'Pharmacological Therapies' (not 'Pharmacological and Parenteral Therapies'). Do not reuse RN category labels for PN.
How hard is the NCLEX-PN?
The NCLEX-PN is considered less complex than the NCLEX-RN due to the narrower LPN/LVN scope of practice, but it is still a rigorous professional licensure exam. First-attempt pass rates for US-educated candidates have historically run in the 83–88% range. The Next Generation NCLEX (NGN) format applies to NCLEX-PN as well, with clinical judgment questions featuring case studies and novel item types.
How does CAT work on NCLEX-PN?
Like the RN exam, NCLEX-PN uses computer adaptive testing under the NGN format. The exam has a minimum of 85 items and a maximum of 150 questions. The algorithm adapts question difficulty based on your performance and ends when it is 95% confident of your ability level relative to the passing standard. The number of questions you answer does not indicate pass or fail.
What education is required for the NCLEX-PN?
Candidates must complete an accredited practical nursing or vocational nursing program, which typically runs 12–18 months and results in a diploma or certificate. Graduates apply for candidacy through their state board of nursing and receive an ATT from Pearson VUE before scheduling.
How long should I study for the NCLEX-PN?
Most candidates study for 3–8 weeks after program completion. Structured NCLEX-PN review courses, daily practice questions, and weekly performance tracking are the most effective strategy. Focus on the LPN scope of practice: data collection, basic nursing interventions, medication administration, and reinforcing patient teaching, areas that differ from RN-level clinical judgment.
How does NCLEX-PN compare to NCLEX-RN in scope?
NCLEX-PN tests for LPN/LVN competency, which emphasizes data collection (not full assessment), assisting in care plans, reinforcing (not initiating) patient teaching, and administering medications under physician or RN supervision. NCLEX-RN requires independent nursing judgment, full patient assessment, care plan development, and complex prioritization. LPNs work under RN or physician oversight; RNs practice independently within their state's nurse practice act.
What career paths does passing NCLEX-PN open?
Passing NCLEX-PN licenses you as an LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) or LVN (Licensed Vocational Nurse, in California and Texas). LPNs work in long-term care, home health, physician offices, correctional facilities, and some hospital units. Many LPNs use PN licensure as a stepping stone while completing an LPN-to-RN or LPN-to-BSN bridge program.
What happens if I fail NCLEX-PN?
The 45-day wait period and reapplication process through the state board applies. NCSBN provides a candidate performance report showing content category performance. Repeat candidates should identify their weakest domains and use a targeted remediation course before retesting. There is no lifetime attempt limit under NCSBN policy, though some states may have additional restrictions.
Does the LPN license require renewal and CE?
Yes, LPN licensure must be renewed periodically (typically every 1–2 years depending on state) through the state board of nursing. Most states require continuing education hours for renewal; requirements vary by state. Working LPNs typically receive CE through their employer or approved online platforms.
